Ten Deep in the Fog
The procession rolls onto the parade route: a long yellow-brick road under a dusky, shadowless light, knee-high fog on either side, and thousands of silent figures standing ten deep in it — adults, children, babies — all in identical earthy-brown rags, all wearing oversized bulbous masks of goblins, trolls, hobgoblins and demons. Nothing plays; nobody speaks. Carl examines a child on the roadside and gets an answer that is less a stat block than a confession: she is a non-combatant who no longer exists, a Primal under the mask, an anonymous flash of memory kept by the Eulogist — and the System AI says plainly that it is her and she is it. Donut readies a Wall of Fire she is told she will not need, Mongo has to be talked out of the crowd, and the AI stutters out the order to prepare to move.
