Imani's Maltese · the one face in the room with its eyes
A small white Maltese, barking herself hoarse on the couch of the third-floor what-if apartment where Imani's family stands around a relative in mid-seizure. Every human in the room has stitched, crossed-out eyes. The dog does not, and nobody can account for it. The simulated Imani scoops her up, backs into a bedroom and slams the door before the shells rupture, and the real Imani — watching from a racing vehicle small enough to be crushed by a dropped phone — wants to know what that means for her dog. The question is still open when the heat ends.
Book 8 appearances
- Chapter 75 — Barking at the chaos from the couch in apartment 310 and then carried into a back bedroom by the simulated Imani, the only occupant of the room whose eyes are not sewn shut and crossed out.
- Chapter 76 — Still audible through the door as the bugs come out of the walls, and the thing Imani asks about twice over party chat while the swarm is still chasing them.
