Creature · debuts Book 5, Chapter 14 — “Nadine”
Nadine, the Bearded Sage Caterpillar
Signet’s six-saddle mount · a transfigured Chee
An enormous, fuzzy, yellow tree-caterpillar (Lv 50) that chews trails through the jungle and carries the six Were-Kin warriors on a row of saddles like an amusement-park ride. Nadine wasn’t born an insect: she was a Chee, the teacher who ran the Chee day school (and, quietly, a former actress), transfigured by then-Princess Imogen along with her students the night the High Elves took their land. She can no longer speak. Bearded Sages normally just munch leaves until they spin a chrysalis and become something equally harmless.
Book 5 appearances
- Chapter 14 — Introduced as Signet’s trail-chewing mount: a transfigured Chee schoolteacher carrying the six were-castors.
- Chapter 27 — Killed at Fort Freedom: she charges the eryops boss to defend Carl and is detonated by its twin lightning bolts.
- Chapter 28-29 — The grieving were-castors gather around her remains and wail; Edgar uses a tattoo needle to draw a blood-and-ink elemental tattoo of Nadine onto Signet in a moonlight rite.
