The System AI

The Syndicate's “neutral observer” artificial intelligence, created and dispatched to build and run Earth's 18-level World Dungeon and enforce its rules. It is the source of every System message: the cold, bureaucratic seizure announcement in Chapter 1 and the unhinged, foul-mouthed game-show-host narration that greets crawlers on the First Floor are the same entity in two registers; Carl just mistakes them for different speakers at first. Behind the snark sits real power and a real personality: a notorious foot fetish, a deepening fixation on Carl, and a mean streak the crawlers learn to dread the deeper they go.

Book 1 appearances

• Chapter 1 — Delivers the seizure announcement and introduces itself as “a Syndicate neutral observer AI, myself,” dispatched to supervise the World Dungeon and enforce its rules.
• Chapter 2 — The “Welcome, Crawler” First-Floor greeting: a new, overly-enthusiastic “game show host” register Carl thinks is a different speaker. Starts the Time to Level Collapse countdown.
• Chapter 44 — Flexes its referee power: halves the over-aggressive Brindled Vespas, and suspends the manager Zev for warning Carl about the rage elemental.
