Janitor mobs spawn from corpses
Every floor has a janitor-mob system (rats, then brindle grubs) that spawns 1–15 scavengers per corpse and homes them in on crawlers when no bodies are near, up to a per-quadrant cap of 5,000. Kill too much in one place and you flood yourself with a harmless-but-suffocating swarm. The dungeon's way of forcing crawlers to keep moving.
