A Parade of Horribles · Chapter 79

The Line Out of the Dungeon

Of the 989 crawlers left on Floor 11, 715 confirmed they were stepping into the Outreach Guild and not coming back out, leaving 274 crawlers on 103 teams; the ones leaving stripped their vehicles for trade and each used Milk's method to leave a spell in the Book of Voodoo on the way out. Osvaldo refused a deal to Carl's face, not knowing Donut had already turned his teammate Filipe, and Chris refused as long as Imani was staying, though he did talk both Erins into going. Imani's chart put the final race at sixty-five to seventy heats and showed that thirteen more full teams had to leave to keep crawlers from being drawn against each other; nobody else left. Outside the Desperado Club, Britney met Carl with shaking hands and red-rimmed eyes, and when he pressed her she pushed a warning into his mind — survive, don't worry about her — evidence that whatever had hold of her was accelerating. Pontiff, hired to look into the club's vanishing strippers, reported instead that the casino's Wheel of Fortune now carried a “Nothing” slot again in suspicious quotation marks, and set out to learn whether it was a dimensional exit. Prepotente closed the day by calling the floor's ending anticlimactic and the last race a nonevent, which earned him a scream from Donut and a good-race hug from Carl.
