A Parade of Horribles · Chapter 96

A Deity Has Fallen

Donut zaps into the club on one of Lucia's loop-de-loop traps as Penny is swapped out to Taranis's feet under Khepri's invulnerability. Two bolts — Katia's Ophiotaurus shot and a Danforth — go into Emberus's burning eye sockets and pin him for the fifteen seconds his invulnerability is down. His answering incineration spell would have killed Carl instantly; the clover patch hands it to Penny instead, which is the entire point. Puddle Jumper pulls Carl and Donut out into an arena that has become a demolition derby: the food truck spinning and on fire, Krakaren stripped of all but two tentacles and dumped in the stands, thousands of mobs dying under upgraded tenth-floor vehicles. Emberus bursts out of the kaiju bug in his world-melting form screaming Carl's name — and Taranis, seeing who fired on his pig, twists his wrist and detonates his own brother. A deity has fallen; the blast flattens every vehicle in the arena, wrecks the RV that was their shelter, and leaves Jamal legless but alive. Taranis reforms Penny in his hands. Carl pulls out his motorcycle, Donut refuses to get off, and the world freezes: Eris has entered the realm.
