The Death of Emberus
Carl never intended to fight the god of sun and ash. Having renounced his faith on purpose and confessed to killing Geyrun, he has Donut teleported into the club to put two bolts through Emberus's burning eye sockets — Katia's Ophiotaurus shot and a Danforth made to hold a god in place — pinning him for the fifteen seconds his invulnerability is down. The god's answering incineration spell is shunted onto Penny by Carl's clover patch, and that is the mechanism of the whole plan: Taranis, watching the brother who just maimed the pig he is courting rise out of the kaiju bug, twists his wrist and detonates him with one second of invulnerability left. The System says only that a deity has fallen and the heavens tremble with rage. The blast flattens every vehicle in the arena, and Carl later finds Emberus's memorial crystal half-buried in the dirt.
