The System spends four paragraphs on an extended office metaphor — the boss everyone whispers about, whom you finally meet coming out of the bathroom fighting a stuck zipper — before landing on the point: second only to the floor boss, which does not appear until the tenth level, a country boss is the worst thing a crawler can run into. Carl got it when Imogen appeared in the convoy to the castle. The reward line is an insult, not a prize.
