Creature · debuts Book 8, Chapter 75 — “What the Shells Were Holding”
Sacred Guardian of the Immortal Tem
The hundred-foot gate boss that never assembled
The tenth floor's intended gate boss, recorded here as a plan and nothing more. The beetles seeded through the apartment shells were meant to ignore the racers completely, flow up to the roof and lock together into a single hundred-foot figure. The floor's designer admits on the broadcast that a death cult broke the game badly enough to throw an error it did not notice until the race had already started, so the boss is canceled, the swarm's aggression is switched on, and the invulnerability that made the bugs safe scenery is not being removed. It is the reason the back half of the run is spent being chased by something nobody is permitted to kill.
Book 8 appearances
- Chapter 75 — Named only in the designer's apology for the swarm: the bugs were to gather on the roof and become it, the error killed the plan, and what the racers get instead is an invulnerable hostile swarm and no boss fight at all.
