Sacred Feaster Scarab Beetle

Armored, six-legged and oddly hairy, wet-looking as fresh paint, its black shell throwing a deep purple sheen with a familiar yellow glow underneath and its forward legs shaped like scythes. Beside the miniaturized racers it looms bear-sized, and roughly half of any given swarm unseals its back plates and takes to the air. The System labels it invulnerable and states outright that it may not be killed while that condition holds. Thousands were packed into the tenth floor's human shells to be released when the racers broke the apartment loops; they were supposed to ignore the crawlers entirely and assemble on the roof, and instead their aggression came on early and they hunt the racers through the building with their invulnerability intact.

Book 8 appearances

• Chapter 75 — One leaps from a ruptured shell's head onto the window right in front of the truck and is named by the System, along with the notice that it cannot be killed; a wave of them chases the truck up the glass, Nester knocks them off the wall, and half of the falling ones sprout wings.
• Chapter 76 — Swarms the truck through the third and second floors — bounced off the electrified shield unhurt, caught two and three at a time in the foam of Carl's Biscuit Packs, stunned twenty seconds by Imani's Confuzzled, and left circling and snapping uselessly at each other before spilling out into the hallways and the elevator shaft.
• Chapter 78 — Damien's closing argument for taking a deal is that there are a great many of them loose in the building now, and the seventh heat will be run through it anyway.
