The Experience

Level 55 · the floor’s mangled folklore

The first eighth-floor mob Carl meets in Havana: a Level 55 “legendary creature” of pre-Columbian Taíno folklore (a guardian of the dead) rendered as Saturday-morning-cartoon nonsense: an extra-large wolf body with stiff, unbending legs and a comically oversized, bearded human head in a glowing red beret that looks like Che Guevara, “barking” like a man with a megaphone and hurling Spanish insults. Donut all but solos it with Magic Missile, Fireball, Mute and “Why Are You Hitting Yourself?” It exemplifies the floor's mangled mythology: folklore half-researched off an incomplete copy of the internet, like the Earth Beautiful show.
