Taranis has torn the Apito memorial crystal off Prepotente's neck, taking their protection with it. Carl's faith scars now read only Mark of the Damned, a dart he never felt tells him the Kyryap has claimed him, and Emberus's own memorial crystal is lying half-buried in the dirt. Lucia Mar steps into the stairwell holding Florin — with a five-year-old girl clinging to her leg that nobody else sees. Carl puts every survivor into a single party, decides he has to hold the twelfth floor until everyone else is out, and turns to collect his new pet. The goo drains away into an armless, human-faced centipede with a red bow on one antenna: Sexy Scolopendra, level 1, crawler #12,953,456. Donut had grabbed the wrong biscuit.
