The Three Castle Types
Herot’s taxonomy · thrones & faction wars
Cookbook lore (Herot, 16th ed) classifying the dungeon’s castles into three kinds: (1) a plain fortified building, an obstacle, sometimes with a boss; (2) a governmental seat: conquer the throne room or kill the boss to claim its region or country (the type used in the ninth floor’s faction wars, where each team is given a “throne seed” to plant in a fortified structure that can’t be hidden); and (3) a self-contained walled village with its own NPC-and-guard ecology that, once conquered, becomes an owned settlement in the crawler’s interface, taxes and all. Relevant as the whole floor is funneled toward the High Elf castle, a governmental seat, for the Masquerade.
