The Cookbook Annotators

As Carl reads the Anarchist’s Cookbook, generations of dead crawlers speak from its margins: Rosetta (9th ed.) on backpack bomb-stability, Allister (13th) updating her, Forkith the Urgyle sapper (20th, reached at least Floor 11) grieving his sister Barkith, and the verbose, Naga-hating Drakea (22nd ed., the final Naga-run season): “Once lit, a fire is easier to stoke than it is to extinguish… One day they will all burn.” For the first time the Cookbook feels less like a manual and more like a lineage Carl has just joined.

Book 3 appearances

• Chapter 13 — Rosetta, Allister, Forkith and the Naga-hating Drakea speak from the margins as Carl reads.
• Chapter 15 — York’s rambling 10th-edition essay on “the hive” (belonging without ever meeting) haunts Carl as crawlers are stranded.
• Chapter 17 — Herot’s 16th-edition “Worn Path Method” essay argues breaking NPCs out of their false memories is cruel but necessary.
• Chapter 26 — Azin (17th ed) and Drakea (22nd) on indestructible NPCs (kill one that regenerates and it’s guarding something important) is the clue that cracks Growler Gary.
• Chapter 27 — Milk (6th ed) on the maddening inconsistency of portals helps Carl trust the cart-portal rescue plan.
• Chapter 32 — Coolie (19th), Forkith (20th) and Tin (21st) on deity summonings (gods are invulnerable below Floor 12, worn like Soul Armor by rich alien “drivers”) arm Carl’s plan to weaponize Grull.
• Chapter 34 — Carl himself joins the lineage as the 25th-edition annotator, turning the book from manual to manifesto.
