Dr. Metcalf

The navigation unit bolted into the team's race truck, named by Donut and openly hostile to everyone in it. Her lines print on the screen and speak aloud at once, styled like a modified system message, and she threatens Bucket Boy with drowning the first time he reaches for her dials. Donut insists the crew stay polite to her; the display glows red until Carl says please, then turns blue and gives up the path assignment, hazards and map. She shares a name with Miss Beatrice's therapist, which Donut says she checked, and it is not her.

Book 8 appearances

• Chapter 17 — Donut names the truck's GPS as Dr. Metcalf and insists the crew humour her; after Carl adds a please, the display turns from red to blue and lays out the left path, grid spot seven, the hail and the three-hour limit.
• Chapter 18 — Dr. Metcalf calls the thirty-second warning and the start of the environmental hazards, identifies the first detonations as hail, and signs off with the observation that they are all dead.
