The Eye of the Bedlam Bride
The novel's title artifact: not a thing Carl loots but a thing done to him. When Donut's misfired Golden Combo fuses Carl with the captured Bedlam Bride totem (Shi Maria), the spider-demigod pilots his body and, refusing to be a discardable card any longer, uses his own stick-and-poke kit and toraline-root ink to tattoo a single eye into the center of his chest. It binds Shi Maria to him permanently: a closed eye over his sternum, invisible until it blinks, felt as a bottomless hole inside him. Surviving the procedure, she becomes a voice in his mind: “I am a part of you, and you will have to decide. Keep me with you and gain my power, or set me free.” Carl carries the unfinished quest to the Bedlam Bride's city onto the next floor even after Donut rips the card.
