No Deal for Carl or Donut

Donut declines every offer on the table because Carl is declining his, and Chandra logs it on her interface as Crawler Refusing a Deal, with a chime. Privately Chandra thinks the deals are worth taking and would have advised it if she had no stake in Donut lasting longer. The offers include cohosting the prize carousel with Carl, a game guide on a fifteen-season commitment — unheard of for someone on the tenth floor — and a set of quick, safe assignments carrying royalty clauses buried deep enough to take back everything Donut has already earned. Chandra reads them as the industry clawing at money her own filings put out of reach; the large number of survivors has made offers worse than usual for most crawlers, Carl included.

Book 8 appearances

• Chapter 0 — Donut states before the folder is even opened that she has no intention of taking a deal; Chandra agrees none of them are worth looking at, which is a lie of convenience. Most crawlers die intestate and their earnings default to the Syndicate, so competent representation for Donut is exactly what the offers are trying to undo.
