Gatekeeper Monster

A rule of the race circuit, printed in the pre-race briefing: each path is of equal length and each carries a gatekeeper monster partway along that must be killed before anyone can continue. At the boss itself the rule reappears as a red banner over the creature stating that no vehicle or mount may pass until it is dead or removed. The two dots on Dr. Metcalf's map sit close enough together that both gatekeepers can be seen from either road.

Book 8 appearances

• Chapter 17 — The pre-race briefing lists the gatekeeper monsters as the tasks required to complete the course, and the map shows a blinking red dot halfway along each of the twin paths.
• Chapter 20 — A massive red notice floats over both bosses repeating that no vehicle may pass until the gatekeeper is dead or removed, and the examine text confirms Prison Pocket holds that role.
