Mordecai's Tenth-Floor Betrayal
The Prologue flashback to Mordecai's own long-ago crawl, and the root of his every grudge. His guide Odette, desperate to end her indentureship (nine seasons cut if a crawler reaches the eleventh floor), schemes through her demigod-attendant friend Armita to bribe the bored grixist heiress Huanxin Jinx into driving a sponsored storm goddess, Dodola, to strike their stairwell puzzle: outright cheating and fraud. When Huanxin's cut balloons to 50% and the deal collapses, Mordecai (a Ratkin Brute then) offers a suicidal Final Blow to break the level himself. Odette instead orders the bard Chaco to worship Dodola and stab Mordecai's skyfowl brother Uzzi with the Dart of Ophiotaurus, using Uzzi as the involuntary summoning vessel. The trapped god dies in her own caged lightning, opening the stairwell. Odette goes free; Mordecai, learning only mid-act that his brother was murdered, tackles Chaco into the stairwell vowing to escape, find Odette, and kill her.
