The Red Equinox

The difficulty spike that hits the Bubbles in their final days. The day/night cycle distorts to roughly sixteen-hour nights, and the sandstorms double in length and ferocity: on the Land Quadrant the storm stops blowing randomly and instead circles the island like a clock hand, crackling with heavy lightning. It darkens the last push for the stairwell and threatens the exposed level-stairwell crews. The sandcastle’s lightning-rod door, by contrast, is opened during the last ordinary sandstorm before the Red Equinox arrives, not during the Red Equinox itself.

Book 4 appearances

• Chapter 20 — Firas warns it is coming; the crews scramble to shield the open stairwell before it hits.
• Chapter 21 — The one-shot glass-hallway entry into the sandcastle is powered by lightning from the last regular sandstorm, the day before the Red Equinox is set to begin.
