Shapeshifter Taxonomy
Mordecai's field guide to mimics
Mordecai’s rundown of who copies whom, and how to tell them apart by the way they change. Doppelgangers (Katia) sculpt themselves like clay. Mimics change from the mouth outward. Adult changelings snap to a generic race, then tweak. Illusionists fade into existence. None are truly the creature, unlike the Gondii brain-worms (the Valtay), parasites that reanimate the actual dead bodies and run them for centuries by reading old memories. Related horrors: Intellect Hunters (same trick, but the bodies rot and they must keep hopping) and the far more insidious Infiltrators.
