The AI’s Ascendency Ultimatum
The AI narrates the twelfth floor's cotton fields in its announcer voice, calls the history of how the game came to exist a story for another day, and then changes register. In the dungeon's enhancement zone the deities really are all-powerful, and because of how the playground was built they have more power than it does — so the Ascendency, traditionally a few weeks of the elite backstabbing each other for a council seat, now decides everything. It states its own terms plainly: it is not the Eulogist, it does not want to shrink, it is not asleep, it knows how to feed itself, it controls the tunnels and every system that once housed a crawl, and it will not stop unless it is stopped. Then it asks whether they want to play a game. The winner will truly be a god, free to kill it, to rule in its name, or to build a utopia. Rival AIs are already in the running. Viewing is now mandatory, and the screen leaves nothing behind but a one-hour countdown and a science liaison crying quietly.
