Outside Intelligences (OIs)

The AI's own term, announced as it sets the Ascendency's stakes. All those AI systems the Syndicate believed abandoned are still out there; if they can get onto the playing field — and it says some already have — they have as much shot at the throne as any god-driver. It calls them OIs, Outside Intelligences, warns that some of them are intent on old-fashioned revenge, and notes, like any family, that some are more competent than others. The contenders montage that follows runs from gods to crawlers to strangers Victory cannot identify, and ends on the Unwashed.

• Chapter 99 — Announced during the AI's Ascendency declaration, immediately after it tells the god-drivers they are effectively immortal so long as they hold on to their soul armor.
