Carl’s Father
Not a boss but a wound: to break Carl before the key fight, the System splices a small, different-day patch of memory into the Iowa floor, a dilapidated single-wide trailer with his father's prized, dented 1965 Harley FLH Panhead parked out front and a soda-machine sign reading One Fight for Nine Tokens. Inside, Carl finds the abusive father he hasn't seen in twelve years dying in a hospital bed, a cruel, shrunken shell who still barks orders at a terrified six-year-old. Carl whispers the truth into the dying man's deaf ear, refuses to watch his young stepmother end him with a lethal dose of morphine, loots the trailer (the Harley, a Glock, a Centipede cabinet, the murder-weapon morphine hidden in the allium pots) and burns it down, finding, to the producers' frustration, that the confrontation frees him rather than breaks him.

- Chapter 45 — Carl confronts the recorded ghost, declares he is no longer afraid of him, loots the trailer, and burns it as his stepmother administers a fatal morphine dose: “exactly what I needed to see,” while also discovering a half-brother, Asher, he never knew existed.
