Carl’s Harley-Davidson

The motorcycle Carl loots from the spliced-in trailer yard of his dying father on Floor Eight: the only inheritance the man ever left him. Katia tunes it up, and Carl, who started with riding skill from the goblin copper chopper and leveled it up to nine during his solo ride back to the saferoom, runs it on inventory gas, roaring across Cuba to head off Quan Ch. Donut despises it on sight, calling it “a metallic penis extension that comes with a free probation officer and a traumatic brain injury” and complaining its roar draws every red dot for miles; Samantha, lashed to the handlebars, adores the vibrations and makes vroom noises. Loud and conspicuous, it is a terrible stealth vehicle but the fastest way across the open floor.

• Chapter 44 — Carl loots the Harley from his father’s trailer yard, the keyholder boss’s spliced-in patch of old Earth.
• Chapter 49 — He slips out of the saferoom on the bike alone to chase down why OIPAN spent a fortune to put him here.
• Chapter 53 — Tuned by Katia and running on inventory gas, it carries Carl, Donut and a delighted Samantha east across Cuba toward Imani’s church.
