The small, cracked racing helmet of the rival driver killed at the finish line, which ricocheted off Carl's teeth on the way through him. Donut fishes it out of the gore on the truck floor and stashes it, then reads it and finds it carries a curse - worthless, and named after a condition she has never heard of and cannot make sense of.
