A Parade of Horribles · Chapter 51

The Girl Inside Lucia Mar

Carl coughs up what is left of Lucienne, parks clear of the entrance and sends the bugbears to tow the stranded unicorn in, while Donut pockets the dead driver's racing helmet and finds it cursed and worthless. Lucia Mar crosses the paddock in a blink and Carl's Scavenger's Daughter patch fires twice without understanding what it is looking at: a presence naming itself Chalchiuhtlicue speaks through her about open veins, everything trapped converging on the twelfth floor's prize, and the Ascendency no longer being a game. When it withdraws Lucia becomes Azra, a terrified girl asking whether Carl knows her father - the bowling-alley owner whose spell page he ate - and Florin starts a list of the names inside her before she bolts. Dr. Metcalf posts the next track, a gasworks and steel mill run demanding vertical climb, inverted racing and hundred-metre gaps with containment theft enabled; Tran reports surviving Li Na's dread, which left five of twenty-four teams alive, and the fourth heat's board puts Donut's court first and eliminates One Fine Pig. An interlude follows Minus, a Syndicate soother handed his murdered brother Linus's identity and sent down as a half-corporeal tourist on an admitted suicide mission, on his superiors' theory that one surgical crawler kill will collapse the group and start the Ascendency game early.
