Captain Fresh

The Syndicate security-forces captain who runs Minus. His people have just shot a private citizen dead in his own apartment so that his identity can be worn by an operative, and Fresh hands over the cover kit himself: the datapad, the footage, the brother's posts and snicks, the investments and purchased citizenship that make the story hold up. He warns that any suspicion at all will see the System AI pop the infiltrator like a boil, then answers the question he is not supposed to be asked - the Syndicate is losing, the AI stops everything thrown at it and answers in kind, and the alternative is extinction. He also blames viewers like the dead man for keeping the whole thing running.

• Chapter 51 — Delivers the briefing, the cover story and the verdict that the mission is suicide, and states outright that the Syndicate means to destroy the entire system before it spreads further.
