The Veins Are Open

What the presence inside Lucia Mar tells Carl while it has her mouth. It says the goddess with it is new to this place and needs no anchor, that the crawlers and the trapped alike are vessels in the river drowning together, and that more are coming because the veins are open. Everything trapped is on its way, not only her kind but the real, the imagined and the enslaved, all of it gathering and all of it aimed at the prize on the twelfth floor and the Ascendency. It closes by telling Carl that this stopped being a game - for it and for him both.

• Chapter 51 — Whispered in Carl's ear while his Celestial patch fires and fails to understand what it is seeing; the presence withdraws mid-thought and leaves a frightened girl in its place.
