The Unsponsored Gods
Broken safeguard · Orren's explanation
Orren's account of the safeguard the escaped AI has broken. The AI is hard-programmed so that it cannot manually interfere with the minds of gods and goddesses — a limit built to stop an insane AI from using deities to kill everything, and the same system that lets sponsors drive gods on the later floors. Control over non-sponsored gods has now been switched off, so a good portion of them are acting independently. They can manifest only within a short range of the tunnel nodes and not for long, and worse, the AI cannot control them either: the two are at cross-purposes.
Book 8 appearances
- Chapter 28 — Orren confirms this is what Quasar was cut off trying to tell Carl, and that the entity guarding the kinder facility is a god — though not Eileithyia.
- Chapter 52 — Carl works out that the goddess speaking through Lucia is one of the ones that escaped the dungeon, and that she is shut in with the children in Lucia Mar's head.
- Chapter 53 — Rosetta confirms she can remember no sponsorship for this goddess at all, which fits Carl's read that she is one of the loose ones.
- Chapter 87 — The escalation seen from outside: random gods out of the dungeon are appearing across the galaxy near physical tunnel-node exits, looking around confused and vanishing again, usually inside two or three minutes. Casualties are still few, but the fact of it is causing mass panic, and everyone with access to the center system is fleeing home.
