Orthrus

Emberus’s beloved two-headed puppy and Cerberus’s baby brother: a “Juvenile Gate Guardian” (Level 10) the size of half the bubble, erupting from the necropolis ocean on bowed, soaking legs, tail wagging, drool flooding the bowl. Sucked into the Nothing the day his master (Emberus’s son) was murdered, his pure innocence leaves him immune to fire and the Nothing’s blight, but, unlike a true god, he is fragile and killable. The back half of the floor becomes a frantic, cruel quest to keep the rambunctious, doomed puppy alive (lightning, sharks, then a million-gold bounty on his head) and reunite him with grandpa Emberus before the fire god burns everyone.

Book 4 appearances

• Chapter 29 — Fills half the bubble; the group quest “Where the Red God Glows” forces the crawlers to keep the lightning- and shark-battered pup alive, Donut casting Heal Critter on him from the ground.
• Chapter 30 — Lured out of the bubble with a Meat Hooks scroll into the Lacuna: then a world quest puts a bounty on him, Donut healing him from the biplane, and Quan Ch tries to kill him.
• Chapter 31 — Reunited at last with Emberus and whisked away to the twelfth floor to resume his training.
