Personal Energy Shields
Tech-based personal energy shields looted from dead Hunters on Floor Six and unlocked with Cracker Jack scrolls. Carl's is a Valtay Perso-Shield, Platinum Edition: a Saturn-shaped pinback button that takes no equipment slot and wraps him in an inch-thick buffer against physical blows and corporeal magic (Magic Missile, Fireball, Lightning) for about two minutes before it burns out and an hour to recharge. Donut's, clipped to her collar, is the more powerful Bull Rush Bespoke Personal Shield by Hereford War Machines, an opalescent longhorn pin that surrounds her in a moving bubble and can even be set to shield a mount or a whole vehicle. Both are far weaker than Carl's Protective Shell but better than nothing, stopping the first few hits before failing.

- Chapter 52 — Carl spends two Cracker Jack scrolls to unlock both shields ahead of the key hunt, testing the gear looted from the Floor-6 hunters.
