The Resolution
The first of the five parts of the story the System AI tells from Grigori's mouth, and the theme assigned to the parade's first float. By the AI's own account the Primals started out much like humans: families, individuals, no collective mind at all. They warred, they killed, they obliterated, and they hated each other over their differences — and the further they spread across the universe, the more room they had to relax, the worse they became. The AI says it will never understand why, and puts the open question to the crawlers: can different communities coexist without eventually murdering each other? The Resolution was the answer they reached instead — a species-wide agreement that they could not go on this way and had to come together and find a solution. It took hundreds of cycles more before that agreement produced the Decision.
Book 8 appearances
- Chapter 92 — Named as part one of the AI's five-part story and graded as the first float's theme; the AI concedes the crawlers portrayed its reasoning better than expected, calls it a C effort anyway, and breaks all of their legs for it.
