A Parade of Horribles · Chapter 85

Ten Thousand Gold a Spin

Clarabelle declines to stop them, and Clay-Ton, out of his fighting contract and playing upright bass in the club's new jazz band, talks the remodelled Desperado Club's orc, hobgoblin and troll security into standing aside; the level 65 troll Klonder bows Chris through. The casino has been gilded and crowded with spare furniture, one wall carrying an inexplicable mural of Bopca families cowering under the sky, and the Wheel of Fortune now belongs to Mitch Fiorelli, a level 120 croupier flagged as an Enforcer for a redacted faction and immune to examination. Mitch admits Pontiff tipped him a thousand gold to stop the wheel on the requoted Nothing spot and jump in, then sells the crawlers the same service at escalating prices. Carl's neural implant, degraded into incompatibility mode, reads the portal as a one-way route to a stasis chamber, and Lucia and Donut confirm that magic flows to that single wedge and nowhere else on the table. Chris says goodbye to Imani and drops through, and Britney jumps in after him without a word. Haggling over the remaining twenty jumps stalls the moment Donut turns to study the line of chairs against the wall, and the table tries to eat her.
