Carl's Father's Legal Papers

The bundle Carl took out of his father's trailer on the eighth floor and left on the table in Donut's room, still unread — Donut believes he is too frightened to look at them. She read them: Carl's grandparents had set money aside for him and his father was working on reaching it without him knowing, plus a marriage certificate for his father and a new wife and court documents on several arrests. Chandra dismisses the lot because all pre-collapse Earth rulings have been rendered invalid, which is the word Donut wants — she argues that the papers stopped meaning anything when Earth stopped existing, that together they paint a very distinct picture of the man, and that Chandra's own filings do the same for her.

• Chapter 0 — Donut brings them up in the negotiation room as a mirror for Chandra's stack, and closes the comparison by asking what will happen to a marriage certificate and a set of money transfers once the person behind them is destroyed.
