The River in Carl’s Mind

Carl’s mounting, unexplained change

A mystery building across Floor Six: an ever-present “river” roaring in the back of Carl’s mind that floods louder with each kill and each surge of rage, first felt around the time he took the Night Wyrm’s Ring of Divine Suffering and a System achievement’s ominous warning of “unintended and unadvertised side effects.” It brings strange phrases (“the water is running,” “this is my birthday present to you … a chance at life”) and stranger effects: aboard the Valtay vessel, in a “zero zone” that strips all his enhancements, Carl suddenly finds he can half-read Syndicate Standard, “like an old language I hadn’t spoken in a long time.” Something in him is changing, and neither he nor the reader yet knows what.
