The Assassination of Astrid
The Guild-of-Suffering hit Katia needs to break the third seal on her Lock Box of the Night Wyrm, and with it, the Sepsis Crown. The Night Wyrm contracts Carl and Katia to kill the Desperado Club's assistant manager, the bloodlust sprite Astrid. Their meticulous trap-ambush in a secret passage falls apart when Samantha frees the demon Minge; Astrid, sensing the breach, rushes past Carl toward the casino. Amid the carnage Carl tears off her wings while Katia's troll and skull-crow totems blind and skewer her. Her dying plea, to save her husband and children, that she “was almost done” and would soon be free, reveals the Night Wyrm is her own husband Hamed; the fuller truth, that she was an indentured NPC one job short of release, emerges two chapters later.
