The Death of Team Free Love
Before the sixth heat, Samantha rolled into the cul-de-sac to pull the two bugbears away while Carl used his Oozy Form spell for the first time, got into their magical cooler and swapped one Peach-flavored beer for a drilled-out can holding an explosive built in his bomber's studio — concealed well enough that finding it needed a Find Traps skill of at least level twelve, and carried back into their van by the cooler after every race. It existed for one purpose: insurance against the Royal Court coming in last. When Jurgen called for help and Osvaldo claimed to be crossing the finish line, Carl looked at Donut, she nodded, and he opened the Primed subtab and used it. The System reported both racers dead and three teams remaining. Their wreckage was still in the first-floor hallway when Carl and Donut drove past it to the exit.
Book 8 appearances
- Chapter 76 — Carl scrolls to the Primed subtab, apologizes to nobody in particular and detonates; the System eliminates the team for the death of both racers and drops the heat to three, and Carl's own accounting of it is that at least they were not crawlers.
- Chapter 77 — The wreck of their van is in the hallway on the way to the lobby, and Donut climbs into Carl's lap when she sees it; Carl notes they had been killed just short of the finish line, and that the Royal Court never did get to play music with them.
