Team Free Love

The three-bugbear NPC team drawn against Carl and Donut in the first heat, racing a late-90s red Pontiac minivan in tie-dye and beads that Donut reads as costume-shop hippie rather than the genuine article. Alevtina breaks her neck in the back when a bus-sized ladybug knocks the van over at the mouth of the manatee caves, and the wreck burns; Radoslav and Jasha are still trying to save it when Carl stops. They are volunteers of a sort, racing for the freedom the dungeon offered them, and Alevtina wanted to win badly enough to plan a family around it.

Book 8 appearances

• Chapter 3 — Their minivan is the first wreck of the heat, burning on its side in the cave mouth with a bugbear crawling away from it.
• Chapter 4 — Alevtina is dead in the back with a broken neck and the late-90s Pontiac is not going anywhere; Carl and Donut put the fire out rather than let a second team fail to finish, and Carl offers to build a flatbed and tow the survivors across the line.
