The In-Between

What two bugbears tell Carl at the mouth of a cave, sitting beside their dead teammate's van. Jasha and Radoslav have been run through the slime mines, a submarine and a rope city as brothers, enemies and cousins, each assignment a different place with the memories wiped between; they also remember the cold in the gaps they are not supposed to remember at all. It came back all at once when a dying bune crawler in the slime mines told them the whole thing was a game, and something clicked. After that a voice put them in a big room and offered a choice: go back into the cold, or race for their lives and, if they win fair and square, be taken somewhere real to live and never go to the in-between again.

• Chapter 4 — Carl hears it out and immediately thinks of Rory and Lorelai on the first floor; he answers honestly that he and Donut are crawlers and that every other team in the heat is an NPC.
