Garage Manager

Each tenth-floor team is given a garage and two applicants to be manager of it, one keyed to machines and one to living mounts, and the party leader's choice of vehicle decides which applicant gets the job. Whoever is put in charge of the garage returns a vehicle limped back to it to as-new before the next heat starts. The System flags the manager a non-combatant, warns in the same breath that this does not make them invulnerable, bars them from the safe room, and states plainly that if something happens to them nothing gets repaired between heats. Zev later calls the same role a garage attendant. Carl and Donut's two applicants conduct their interview by beating each other with a mallet and a gourd, and the loser is destroyed on the spot.

• Chapter 1 — Hedy and Waldrip Chris are presented as applicants to be manager of the garage, each keyed to a different kind of vehicle; the party's choice of vehicle type decides which of them lives.
• Chapter 2 — Zev calls the role a garage attendant, confirms the repair guarantee holds only while that attendant is alive, and tells the crawlers to use them. Hedy adds that she dies with the party if they come in last.
