Hedy

A level 30 gremlin vehicle mechanic who applies to run Carl and Donut's tenth-floor garage and argues her case while brawling with the rival applicant, pulling a mallet far too large for it out of her red toolbox. She wins the job the moment Donut chooses a mechanical vehicle, and thereafter returns the truck to as-new between heats. The System flags her a non-combatant, bars her from the safe room and warns that nothing gets repaired if she is killed; she tells the party she dies with them if they come in last.

Book 8 appearances

• Chapter 1 — One of two gremlins applying to manage the party's garage; she wins the interview with a mallet and by pointing out that a machine will never try to eat Mongo.
• Chapter 2 — Hauls the roll-up door open at the start of heat one and shouts the rules at the party: do not come in last, only one of them touches the controls, and no crawler drives two heats in a row. She adds that track conditions change every heat and that the first three races are all paved.
• Chapter 6 — Hedy meets the truck in the garage, disapproves of the trailer damage from towing the bugbears, lays out the crew and upgrade rules, and steers Carl to the spider-leg mobility upgrade before Mongo and Rend adopt her as their charge.
• Chapter 11 — Hedy flips and re-catches the wrench for an audience of Mongo, Rend, Dong and Splash Zone, then briefs Carl on which racers can and cannot be trusted.
