Big Shot Chicken Food Truck

The vehicle the wheel deals Carl and Donut: a twenty-foot Big Shot Chicken food truck, fresh off the line, with a fiberglass prohibition-era hood, chrome fenders, round fluted headlamps and the chain's fedora-wearing chicken painted under a spray of bullet holes. Inside there is a driver's seat, a no-slip metal floor where the passenger seat should be, and a new aluminum kitchen. A giant plastic tommy gun is bolted to the roof and its drum magazine blocks enough of the windshield that Carl has to slouch; the headlights do not work, and the thing tops out near 70 miles an hour.

• Chapter 2 — Crunches into the garage when the wheel stops on a box truck silhouette, more festive than the picture promised, with a healthy engine, a roof-mounted plastic tommy gun and no passenger seat.
• Chapter 3 — Runs heat one flat out at about 70 miles an hour on dead headlights, with Mongo unleashed into the cargo space and sick on the dashboard.
• Chapter 4 — Skids to a stop short of the burning minivan in a clatter of pots and pans; Carl raids its kitchen for a bowl to turn into a water hose.
