The navigation box on the food truck's dashboard, which speaks both aloud in the cab and in Carl's head in a female voice he finds familiar and cannot place. It reads out each heat's driver, navigator, distance, track surface, required tasks, environment, hazards and time limit, gives Princess Donut her full string of titles as navigator credit, and editorializes about the hazards. Its map of heat one is a nearly featureless straight line, and it will not give live standings until somebody spends an upgrade on it.

• Chapter 3 — Briefs heat one as 53 kilometers of mostly flat asphalt through the Caves of the Screeching Death Manatees with a six-hour limit, says its ranking display needs an upgrade, and declines to react when Carl points out he can see stars overhead.
