Goff

The alien Residual riding the body of the homeless man Paulie at a Christmas-morning shelter. In a frozen-time message only Carl can hear, Goff lays out the real truth of the crawl, that it is unnecessary, a greed-driven harvest of the primal elements seeded into every living brain, and installs an illegal Containment Interface in Carl's head. His official mission, for the Pacifist faction, is to talk Carl into tripping the fuse and killing everyone; but years inside Paulie have “cross-contaminated” him with human compassion, so he ends by begging Carl to be absolutely certain there is no other way first.
