Heat Two

The GPS unit's briefing for the tenth floor's second heat: ten kilometres of paved road over rolling hills, torrential rain and giant hail, and a three-hour limit. Each team is assigned one of two equal-length paths at random and may not leave it, and each path holds a gatekeeper monster that must be killed before the run can continue. The unit adds, without enthusiasm, that this leg has to be driven by a cat. Carl notes the distance falls much further than the time limit does, and the party has ten hours in the garage to solve the problem of Donut at the wheel.

• Chapter 6 — Read out by the GPS unit as soon as the truck is parked in the garage, and re-read by Carl while he works out how a cat is supposed to drive.
