The Death of Loita

Carl’s first deliberate strike at Borant

Carl's quiet declaration of war. After Loita, the hardline kua-tin PR agent who openly wants humanity exterminated, lets slip that Borant did “unspeakable things” to Zev's mother and aunts to force Zev back into line, Carl decides to act. On the Veriluxx infomercial inside an undersea security trailer, he rigs the defective robot-Donut doll's self-destruct (knowing from Loita's own boast that the trailer's forcefield traps everyone once the shield is up, and from Coolie's cookbook note that a forcefield can hold and keep a hull breach from being instantly fatal), then needles the hosts until Loita has to stay seated beside the doll. It detonates; the cracked window forces Borant to choose: teleport Loita out, breaking the glass and killing their top crawlers, or let her die. They let her die. Carl walks away with a single private word: “One.”
