Odette’s Confession
As phase two splits the party (only squad leaders enter the choice chamber, leaving a terrified Donut to fight her first deck battle alone), Odette has a liaison spy probe shot out of orbit to freeze the changeover and buy fifteen off-record minutes with Carl. She finally tells him the whole truth behind the Prologue's betrayal: the cousin Pieter she abandoned, the friend Armita she chose over him, and the rigged-game deal with Huanxin Jinx that killed Mordecai's brother Uzzi and, in revenge, Armita. She has watched Mordecai drink himself to ruin for centuries, certain she broke him. 'The eye of the Bedlam Bride' is her people's metaphor for ruinous obsession, and she has stared into it again. Her plan is no longer Huanxin's petty revenge: something extreme enough to kill both Huanxin and herself and shut the crawl down for good. Carl, sick of being used, throws it back in her face, 'there is no we,' even as he half-believes every word.
