Pontiff Leaves the Playing Field

The mercenary who proved the exit worked

Rosetta Thagra's test, run by the mercenary who insisted on running it himself. Pontiff bought a portal-examination spell, waited at the top-floor casino for someone to open the reinstated “Nothing” slot, and relayed the scroll's numbers to Rosetta. Her reading: if he stepped through and survived while still hired, the portal was not what they wanted it to be, but if he survived and was removed from Carl's employ, he had been brought out of the holding area into a part of the dungeon outside the playing field, and the original exit plan was still viable. Carl told him it was not necessary to kill himself over this and, being too tired and too stressed to argue, asked him to carry one last message to Herot instead. Pontiff went anyway, saying that changing the sort of person he had been was not enough, and that whatever happened, Carl would at least have information that might help the people he once called friends. The notification arrived in the middle of the transformations, almost lost in the chaos — and it was what finally gave Carl his idea.
